THE BUTCHER OF BAGHDAD
This brilliant allegory, set in a bunker reminiscent of Hitler’s
hell-hole beneath the ruins of Berlin...is obviously targeted
at Saddam Hussein. Although he is never named....the parallel is obvious to
us all and is linked to One Thousand and One Nights where Shahrazad manages
to stay alive by telling the Islamic despot tale after tale each night, thus
avoiding execution
Victoria Parris Plays and Players
The Butcher of Baghdad tells the story of an Arab President during a war
with the Western powers. It was performed on stage by the Cherub Company
in 1993 and on BBC Radio3 the same year.
The dramatic episodes related by
this Shahrazad are based on Saddam Hussein’s actual record of power and cruelty.
