Death of Captain Doughty
Death of Captain Doughty is based on a mysterious incident which actually
happened during Sir Francis Drake's famous voyage round the world.
The play was commissioned by Granada Television and shown in 1973. It
was performed on a single abstract set and was intended, with the encouragement
of the producer, Jonathan Powell, to explore the possibilities of giving
television drama the simplicity and flexibility of stage plays.
Time Out described it as: sparkling, attractive, convincing
and memorable
It works well as a short stage-play and was most recently performed by
and for inmates of Brixton Prison in London.
